Why self-host or switch automation platforms?

Zapier, Make and similar tools charge by task or operation. High-volume workflows get expensive fast, and your business data flows through a third-party cloud.

Open-source automation tools (n8n, Activepieces, Node-RED, Windmill, Automatisch and others) can run on your own server. You keep credentials and payloads inside your network.

Every listing states its licence carefully — including fair-code and source-available licences that are not OSI open source — so you know what you can self-host and what needs a commercial agreement.

Licences differ a lot in this niche. n8n's Sustainable Use License is source-available, not OSI open source. Check each licence before you build a product on top of the code.

How tools are chosen

Each listing links to the official website, states its licence and whether it is fully open source, free but proprietary, or free with paid tiers, and shows stars, last-commit date and licence from the project's public repository where it has one. Top Pick listings are clearly labelled and never change the facts shown about a tool.
